As a result of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) however, after observing the liberal arts experience in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75) and a believer in education that integrates study of the arts with study of many different subjects. That's not so surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! The ethnomusicology program that I began here at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) sits comfortably in a department of music within a College of Letters and Science. The possibility of pursuing multiple interests is something I really appreciate. Graduate students and undergraduates (for who I've written 3 textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experience Music: Expressing Cultural Expression) I enjoy teaching. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods that are primarily academic tasks and periods of administrative duties (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of Undergraduate Advising in 1992-1998, and the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and now am back as Chair of Department of Music).
